Chitosan ("KY-tuh-sin") is an incredible biopolymer derived from the shells of crustaceans, and it has the power to enable technological advancements across pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetic and biotech industries (yes, really!). As researchers are just beginning to understand the amazing potential for this compound, there hasn't really been a reliable, high-volume source for chitosan that meets the high purity standards required for investigational trials. Many manufacturers claim to deliver "medical-grade" chitosan, despite huge disparities in quality between products due to the fact that there's no legal/regulatory standard for the claim. To truly unlock the full potential of chitosan, researchers will need to find a solution better than the typical "medical grade" product.
